y = x + 5 → (1)

y = - 2x - 4 → (2)

Substitute y = x + 5 into (2)

x + 5 = - 2x - 4 ( add 2x to both sides )

3x + 5 = - 4 ( subtract 5 from both sides )

3x = - 9 ( divide both sides by 3 )

x = - 3

Substitute x = - 3 into either of the 2 equations and evaluate for y

Substituting into (1)

y = - 3 + 5 = 2
