Explanation:

(1) 6x - 5y = 72

(2) 2x + 6y = -22

multiply equation (2) by -3

-3 (2x + 6y = -22)

-6x - 18y = 66

add equation (1) and the new equation:

6x + -6x = 0

-5y + -18y = -23y

72 + 66 = 138

---> -23y = 138

divide both sides by -23

y = -6

plug in y = -6 into equation (2):

2x + 6(-6) = -22

2x - 36 = -22

2x = 14

x = 7
