The religious authority of the king was a transfer of sorts. Only Henry VIII really needed this right.

It was the power of the priest that was the disputing point. Things like indulgences really got under Luther's skin. This practice of giving money to the church to get relatives out of purgatory really bothered him.

As far as I know (but I could be wrong) the chance to earn salvation was not in dispute.
