To find a common denominator in this equation, find a number that all 3 denominators can multiply by a whole number to get. The common denominator that I found was 16. 16*1=16, 8*2=16, 4*4=16. Whatever number you multiplied to get the common denominator, multiply the numerator (top number on the fraction) by the same number that you multiplied the denominator by to get the same denominator. 3/8 * 2/2 = 6/16, 1/4 * 4/4 = 4/16. Now that all of the numbers have the same denominator, we can just add the numerators together, be warned though, don't add the denominators together. 5 + 6 + 4 = 15. The numerator is equal 15 and the denominator is 16. Now put them together to get 15/16.
