we know how much flour Jana has and we also know how much she needs for a recipe, well, how many more cups for the recipe? well, is just their difference.

let's firstly convert the mixed fractions to improper fractions and then subtract.

\stackrel{mixed}{5(1)/(4)}\implies \cfrac{5\cdot 4+1}{4}\implies \stackrel{improper}{\cfrac{21}{4}}~\hfill \stackrel{mixed}{3(3)/(4)} \implies \cfrac{3\cdot 4+3}{4} \implies \stackrel{improper}{\cfrac{15}{4}} \\\\[-0.35em] ~\dotfill\\\\ \cfrac{21}{4}~~ - ~~\cfrac{15}{4}\implies \cfrac{21-15}{4}\implies \cfrac{6}{4}\implies \cfrac{3}{2}\implies 1(1)/(2)~\textit{cups of flour}
