Let x = the number of grapefruits

Let y = the number of bags of nuts

x + y = 200 → x = 200 - y

2x + 20y = 1282 Substitute 200 - y for x

2(200 - y) + 20y = 1282

400 - 2y + 20y = 1282 Combine like terms

400 + 18y = 1282 Subtract 400 from both sides

18y = 882 Divide both sides by 18

y = 49 This is the number of bags of nuts sold.

x + y = 200 Substitute 49 for y to solve for x

x + 49 = 200 Subtract 49 from both sides
