Characteristics of a food chain
1. Linear Structure - In an ecosystem, a food chain represents the transfer of nutrients and energy from one organism to another.
2. Energy Flow - Energy moves from the producer to the primary consumer, then to higher-level consumers, in a single path in a food chain.
3. Trophic Levels - Depending on where they are in the food chain, different types of organisms are categorized into different trophic levels.
4. Energy Transfer Efficiency - The amount of energy available at each trophic level decreases as it climbs up the food chain.
5. Dependence on Producers - In the end, all species in a food chain rely on producers (often plants) to use photosynthesis to turn sunlight into useful energy.
