y = 56 - 2x → (1)

x + 2y = 82 → (2)

substitute y = 56 - 2x into (2)

x + 2(56 - 2x) = 82

x + 112 - 4x = 82

- 3x + 112 = 82 ( subtract 112 from both sides )

- 3x = - 30 ( divide both sides by - 3 )

x = 10

substitute x = 10 into (1)

y = 56 - 2(10) = 56 - 20 = 36
