If twice the age of son is added to age of father, the sum is 56. But if twice the age of the father is added to the age of son, the sum is 82. Find the ages of father and son.​

Answer:

father is 36 and son is 10

Explanation:

let x be the age of the son and y the age of the father , then

2x + y = 56 ( subtract 2x from both sides )

y = 56 - 2x → (1)

x + 2y = 82 → (2)

substitute y = 56 - 2x into (2)

x + 2(56 - 2x) = 82

x + 112 - 4x = 82

- 3x + 112 = 82 ( subtract 112 from both sides )

- 3x = - 30 ( divide both sides by - 3 )

x = 10

substitute x = 10 into (1)

y = 56 - 2(10) = 56 - 20 = 36

that is the father is 36 and the son is 10
