for the figure to be a parallelogram , the opposite sides must be congruent, that is

5y = 20 ( divide both sides by 5 )

y = 4

and

2(x + y - 1) = x + 3y ← distribute parenthesis on left side by 2

2x + 2y - 2 = x + 3y ← substitute y = 4

2x + 2(4) - 2 = x + 3(4)

2x + 8 - 2 = x + 12

2x + 6 = x + 12 ( subtract x from both sides )

x + 6 = 12 ( subtract 6 from both sides )

x = 6
