I check my work in English very often. This is because that class is especially important to make sure that what you're writing is gramatically correct. I check my work the same in other subjects, it is about the same for each class. I think I picked up the habit to check my work in elementary school because it was very ingrained in my head at that age to make sure it was correct. That habit has impacted my academic success in a good way because when your work is proofread and gramatically correct you get a better grade.
