The Declaration of Independence announced to the world that the British American Colonies would no longer associate with Great Britain and would instead become the United States of America. Although there were some people who didn't necessarily know which side to take, others knew where they stood on the issues. What were the two sides a person could be on (what were they called) and what did each one believe?

During the American Revolution, there were two primary sides: the Patriots and the Loyalists. The Patriots believed that the American colonies should be independent from Great Britain, and they supported the American Revolution. They believed that the British government had become tyrannical and that the colonies should be free to govern themselves. The Loyalists, on the other hand, believed that the colonies should remain part of Great Britain and that the British government had the right to tax and govern the colonies. They also believed that the British government would protect their rights as British citizens.
