The Dutch were motivated to expand their land claims for a number of reasons. One reason was economic: the Dutch West India Company hoped to establish profitable fur trading networks with Native American tribes in the region. Additionally, the Dutch were seeking to establish a foothold in the New World to compete with other European powers, such as the Spanish and the English, who had already established colonies in the Americas. Finally, the Dutch were also motivated by a desire to spread their Reformed Protestant faith to the New World.
