Dramatic irony occurs when the reader is aware of something that one or more characters in a narrative know nothing about. Often, dramatic irony involves an outcome or meaning of an event. This situation can create humor or suspense for the reader. Give an example of dramatic irony in chapter 3 of A Christmas Carol, and explain the impact of this dramatic irony on the story.

Answer: The narrator repeats the fact that Marley is dead "emphatically" and uses the same simile multiple times. He even sounds nervous, as if he is trying to reassure himself that Marley is dead. This creates a sense of foreboding and suggests that everything will not remain as it initially seemed.
