Eliminate the y variable.

5x + y = -16

-1 (2x + y = -4)

Solve:

5x + y = -16

-2x - y = 4

3x = -12

Divide both sides by 3.

x = -4

5(-4) + y = -16

-20 + y = -16

Add 20 to both sides.

y = 4
