The diagram shows the floor plan for a classroom. the meeting center will be covered with carpet, and the rest of the floor will be covered in tile. The tile costs $4.90 per square foot. The budget for the tile is 3000. Is there enough money in the budget to pay for the tile?

Answer:

Area of meeting center:

(1/2)(10)(22 + 14) = 5(36) = 180 f²

Area of rest of floor:

25(32) - 180 = 800 - 180 = 620 ft²

Cost to cover floor (excluding meeting center) with tile:

($4.90/ft²)(620 ft²) = $3,038

There is not enough money in the budget to pay for the tile.
