Passing a U.S. history and government exam is a requirement for a person to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. In addition to passing the exam, there are several other requirements that an individual must meet, including:
Be at least 18 years old
Be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen)
Have continuous residence in the U.S. for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen)
Be physically present in the U.S. for at least half of the required residency period
Be a person of good moral character
Be able to speak, read, and write basic English
Demonstrate a knowledge of U.S. history and government
Take an oath of allegiance to the United States
Working in the U.S. for at least five years, being born to American parents, serving in the U.S. military, and gender are not requirements for naturalization.
