Shannon states that 7 5/8 − 5 1/3 = 2 4/5 because 7 − 5 = 2, 5 − 1 = 4, and 8 − 3 = 5

First, state whether you agree or disagree. Then, explain briefly how to subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators. Be sure to show your solution as a subtraction equation.

Answer:

I disagree.

To subtract fractions with unlike denominators, first find the LCD, which in this case is 24. So 5/8 becomes 15/24, and 1/3 becomes 8/24. We then have:

7 (5)/(8) - 5 (1)/(3)

7 (15)/(24) - 5 (8)/(24) = 2 (7)/(24)

Shannon states that 7 5/8-5 1/3=2 4/5 because 7-5=2 5-1=4 and 8-3=5. I would completely diasgree with the statement. 55/24 is how the mixed fraction can be subtracted.
You could first find a common denominator and use it to rewrite each fraction
Follow the following steps while subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators
Step 1: Find the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) between the two denominators.
Step 2: Multiply the numerator and denominator of each fraction by a number so that they have the LCM as their new denominator.
Step 3: Add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
The above problem may be solved in this way
=7 5/8 - 5 1/3
=(61/8) - (16/3)
= 183-128/24
=55/24
