Explanation:

a segment joining the midpoints of 2 sides of a triangle is

half the length of the third side

that is

MN =
(1)/(2) JL , so

2x + 5 =
(1)/(2) (8x - 18) ← distribute parenthesis by
(1)/(2)

2x + 5 = 4x - 9 ( subtract 4x from both sides )

- 2x + 5 = - 9 ( subtract 5 from both sides )

- 2x = - 14 ( divide both sides by - 2 )

x = 7

Then

MN = 2x + 5 = 2(7) + 5 = 14 + 5 = 19
