The Treaty of Versailles although harsh was to stop Germany from causing another war and to punish them severely for their actions. The Treaty of Versailles ended up causing another World War when Germany's economy was in shambles from paying the expensive reperations and feeling like they had no say in the Treaty of Versailles (They weren't allowed to write the Treaty of Versailles). The War Guilt Clause specifically is what blamed Germany for the war causing all of the terms I have listed.
