A quadrilateral with vertices at A(4,-4), B(4, -16), C(12, -16), and D(12,-4) has been dilated with a center at the origin.

The image of D, point D', has coordinates (36, -12). What is the scale factor of the dilation?

Answer:

the scale factor = 3

Explanation:

the question is basically saying: how did (12,-4) jump to (36,-12)

we can make d represent the scale factor used to get (12,-4) to (36,-12)

so,

12d = 36

-4d = -12

all there's left to do is to simply solve for d, which is 3
