y = - 2x + 4 → (1)

y = 3x - 1 → (2)

substitute y = 3x - 1 into (1)

3x - 1 = - 2x + 4 ( add 2x to both sides )

5x - 1 = 4 ( add 1 to both sides )

5x = 5 ( divide both sides by 5 )

x = 1

substitute x = 1 into either of the 2 equations and solve for y

substituting into (2)

y = 3(1) - 1 = 3 - 1 = 2

solution is (1, 2 )
