Answer: 12 cm^2

Explanation:

Find area of small square = 2x2 = 4cm^2

Find Area of Big Square = 4x4 = 16cm^2

Area of Shaded Region = Area of Big Square - Area of small square = 16 - 4 = 12cm^2
