Denial—if he is refusing to believe she is gone, he is denying it. Therefore, he is in a state of denial.

You can also ask yourself: does he sound angry? Does he sound at peace, like he has accepted it? Does he sound like he is pleading or bargaining for his wife back?

If your answer to all of these is no, then as a result, you’re left with denial.
