Evelyn is making greeting cards, which she will sell by the box at an arts fair. She paid $36 for a booth at the fair, and the materials for each box of cards cost $4. She will sell the cards for $10 per box of cards. At some point, she will sell enough cards so that her sales cover her expenditures. How much will the sales and expenditures be? How many cards will that take?

Answer:

When she sells 6 cards her expenses and profits will equal. At 6 cards the expense and sales would be $60.00.

Explanation:

y = 10x She makes 10 per card.

y = 4x + 36 This is how much it costs to make cards. Set them equal to each other and solve for x.

10x = 4x + 36 Subtract 4x from both sides

10x - 4x = 4x - 4x + 36

6x = 36 Divide both sides by 6

x = 6

6 cards will be the break even point

y = 6(10)

y = 60 This is the income for 6 cards.

y = 4(6) + 36

y = 24 + 36

y = 60 This is the expense for 6 cards.
