What reasons did the Americans have to be afraid of communism, especially given the developments of 1949?

Karl Marx points out the issues with the industrial age (long hours, etc). He thought workers would eventually rebel and support Communism. Americans feared Communism, because our nation was so great because of our commitment to capitalism.
