Explanation: This is stated in stage 2 of Erikson’s Stages of (Psychosocial) Development. It occurs at around 18 months and sustains until the ages 2 or 3. Children at this point feel the need to claim their independence & have control over themselves and their environment, as they are learning to do things on their own. Children who are successful at this stage of development typically feel confident in their abilities (which eventually has a greater impact on their future success in specific skills & tasks throughout later development (e.g., a child who is confident in their abilities & skills is more likely to excel in socialising or academics.)). Whereas, children who do not complete this stage tend to feel inadequate or simply put, shame & doubt in their abilities- hence the title “Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt”.
