Answer: The Great Depression was a time when many Americans struggled to make ends meet. FDR's New Deal programs were designed to bring the economy out of the Depression. They helped Americans regain employment and established assistance for groups that needed help, such as the unemployed and retirees. These programs increased the involvement of the government in the lives of citizens. Citizens became more accustomed to the idea that in times of trouble, they could look to the government for assistance.

The Great Depression had a profound impact on Americans' views of the role of the government. Prior to the Depression, many Americans held a classical liberal view of the government, believing that it should play a limited role in the economy and that individuals should be free to pursue their own economic interests. However, the failure of the market to prevent the widespread economic devastation of the Depression led many Americans to question this view and to demand that the government take a more active role in regulating the economy and providing assistance to those in need. As a result, the Depression marked a shift towards a more interventionist approach to government and laid the groundwork for the development of the modern welfare state.
