Carbohydrates are organic molecules that mainly consist of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

Nomenclature; Monosaccharides are named based on the number of carbons, functional groups, and stereoisomerism.

What is the structure and nomenclature of carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates exist as three main types, namely; Monosaccharides which are simple sugars with single sugar units. They can be linear or cyclic.

Disaccharides are two monosaccharides joined by a glycosidic bond and polysaccharides are long chains of monosaccharides linked together. Examples of polysaccharides are starch, glycogen, cellulose.
