karen purchased a DVD player on sale. the original price was $179.30. the sale price was 159.92 what is the first step in finding the percent markdown? find the percent markdown.

well, let's do so and hmmm you decide which is the 1st step :)

so the DVD costs originally 179.30 but the store is selling it marked down by "x" percent, down to 159.92, hmmmm 179.30 - 159.92 = 19.38.

so if we take 179.30(source amount) to be the 100%, what is 19.38 off of it in percentage?


\begin{array}{ccll} amount&\%\\ \cline{1-2} 179.30 & 100\\ 19.38& x \end{array} \implies \cfrac{179.30}{19.38}~~=~~\cfrac{100}{x} \\\\\\ 179.3x=1938\implies x=\cfrac{1938}{179.3}\implies x\approx 10.81
