To find the rate of change is the same as finding the slope. To find the slope between two points you'd use the slope formula, which is y2-y1 over x2-x1.

You'd get -8-1 over -8-16. -8-1 is -9. -8-16 is -24 so you'd get -9/-24.

Because that isn't one of the answer choices you have to simplify it. To simplify it you would divide both numbers by the same number. A common number they both share is 3. So then you'd divide -9 by 3 and you'd divide -24 by 3. -9 divided by 3 is -3. -24 divided by 3 is -8 so you'd get -3/-8. Which should be C. -3/8. Because both numbers are negative the answer should have a negative sign so you'd cross b and d out. And a isn't right because the 8 is supposed to be in the denominator and not in the numerator.
