The Compromise of 1877
is generally considered to be the official end of Reconstruction
. The compromise
was an informal deal between Republicans and Democrats that settled the disputed 1876 presidential election. The compromise resulted in the withdrawal of federal troops from the South and the election of Rutherford B. Hayes as president.
