Explanation:

- 4x + 4y = - 8 → (1)

4x - 6y = 16 → (2)

adding (1) and (2) term by term will eliminate x

0 - 2y = 8

- 2y = 8 ( divide both sides by - 2 )

y = - 4

substitute y = - 4 into either of the 2 equations and solve for x

substituting into (2)

4x - 6(- 4) = 16

4x + 24 = 16 ( subtract 24 from both sides )

4x = - 8 ( divide both sides by 4 )

x = - 2

solution is (- 2, - 4 )
