x = 8, y = 7

Explanation:

The two equations are

y = 3x - 17 [1]

y = x -1 [2]

Substitute y = x - 1 in the first equation

x - 1 = 3x - 17

==> x - 3x = -17 + 1

==> -2x = -16

==> x = -16/-2 = 8

Sub for x in [2]

y = 8 - 1 = 7
