Initial liquid volume is x.

3/4 of the liquid was removed:

  • x - \cfrac{3}{4} x

Then 1/2 quarts added, the expression including the addition is:

  • x - \cfrac{3}{4} x + \cfrac{1}{2}

Simplify to get equivalent expression:

  • \cfrac{1}{4} x + \cfrac{1}{2}
