rearrange y=3x-17 to -3x+y=-17

then subtract to get x or y

x+y=3

- (-3x+y=-17)

4x=20

x=20/4

x=5

then sub in the x value into one of the equations

for x+y=3

(5)+y=3

y=3-5

y= -2
