Consider what you learned in this unit about adulthood and/or old age. What piece of information most surprised or intrigued you, and why? How would you explain that piece of information in your own words to someone who does not have a background in psychology?

The most intriguing aspect of aging is that it encompasses not only biological changes but also psychological attitudes towards growing older. It's fascinating to see how some elderly individuals defy common stereotypes by staying active and socially engaged.

The concept that intrigued me the most is how aging reflects not just the biological process of growing older, but also includes our attitudes and beliefs about the aging process. In my own words, aging can be thought of as how we grow and change, both in our bodies and in our minds, as we get older. Surprisingly, some people may feel younger or older than their actual age, which speaks to the psychological aspect of aging, not just the physical.

In the context of psychology and sociology, it's interesting to note the changes both biological, such as physical decline, and psychological, such as how we cope with the changes in our mental faculties or societal roles. The study of aging, or geriatrics, delves into these aspects and how they impinge upon the elderly. The attitudes toward aging can significantly affect how an individual experiences getting older.

When examining elders within my own life or community, it becomes apparent that some defy stereotypes of aging. For example, they might remain active, engaged in new learning, and maintain a strong social network, which contradicts common biases that the elderly are frail or disengaged.
