The easiest way to explain why it has no solution is by just solving it!

To solve it...

1) Get rid of the smallest value of x

The smallest value of x in the question is 3x and to get rid of it we need to subtract 3x from both sides

  • 5x - 3x = 2x
  • 3x - 3x = 0
  • 2x = 0

Already we can see how the question is shaping out to have no solution!

2) Get rid of the term surrounding the x

The term around the x is 2 and to get rid of it we need to divide both sides by 2

  • 2x ÷ 2 = x
  • 0 ÷ 2 = 2
  • x = 0

As x can't have the value of 0 we can see that this question has no solution
