A cylindrical jar has a height of 6 in and a diameter of 4 in. The jar is ¾ full of coffee grounds. To remove coffee from the jar, Andy uses a cylindrical scoop that has a height of 1 in. and a diameter of 2 in. One scoop holds 0.6 oz of coffee grounds and makes one cup of coffee.

How many cups of coffee can Andy make from the coffee grounds that are currently in the jar?

Find the volume of the container then find ¾ of it because it’s only ¾ full. The divide by the volume of the scoop to find how many cups of coffee can be made.

Answer:

  • Andy can make 18 cups of coffee

==================

Volume of the jar

  • V = πr²h = π×(4/2)²×6 = 24π

¾ of the volume of the jar

  • ¾ V = ¾ × 24π = 18π

Volume of the scoop

  • V = πr²h = π×(2/2)²×1 = π

Divide the volume of coffee in the jar by the volume of the scoop

  • 18π/π = 18
