Answer: 52

Explanation:

x + y = 12 and

$3.50x + $5.50y = $52

x + y = 12

x-x + y = 12 - x

y = 12 - x

$3.50x + $5.50 (12-x) = $52

3.50 x + 66 - 5.50x = 52

66-2x= 52

66-66-2x= 52-66

-2x = -14

2x = 14

x = 7

y = 12 - x

y = 12 - 7 = 5

Hence, you bought 7 calla lilies and 5 peonies!

Check:

3.50 (7) + 5.50 (5) = 24.50 + 27.50 = 52
