Instructions for a craft project say that the length of a piece of red ribbon should be 7 inches less than the length of a piece of blue ribbon. How long is the BLUE ribbon if the length of the RED ribbon is 12 inches?

The blue ribbon is 19 inches long

r = red, b=blue

r = b-7
12= b-7, add 7 to both sides
19= b

Checking answer, if blue is 19 inches, 7 inches less than that is 12, which is the length of the red.
