Answer:

x = - 1 , y = - 2

Explanation:

given the system of equations

2x - 5y = 8 → (1)

3x + 5y = - 13 → (2)

adding the 2 equations, term by term , will eliminate y

(3x + 2x) + (5y - 5y) = - 13 + 8

5x + 0 = - 5

5x = - 5 ( divide both sides by 5 )

x = - 1

substitute x = - 1 into either of the 2 equations and solve for y

substituting into (2)

3(- 1) + 5y = - 13

- 3 + 5y = - 13 ( add 3 to both sides )

5y = - 10 ( divide both sides by 5 )

y = - 2

the solution is x = - 1 , y = - 2
