Molecular orbital configuration
The distribution of electrons in molecular orbitals created when atomic orbitals overlap during molecule bonding is referred to as molecular orbital configuration. The behavior of electrons in a molecule is described mathematically by molecular orbitals. According to molecular orbital theory, atomic orbitals can overlap constructively to produce bonding molecular orbitals, or destructively to produce antibonding molecular orbitals.
The bond order is
1/2( Bonding - Antibonding electrons)
= 1/2(12 - 9)
1/2(3)
= 3/2
