Tyrone has $900 in his retirement account, and Cooper has $400 in his. Tyrone is adding $1 per day, whereas Cooper is contributing $6 per day. Eventually, the two accounts will contain the same amount. How long will that take?

Write a system of equations, graph them, and type the solution.

we have that

x ------> number of days

y -----> amount in dollars in retirement account

so

Tyrone

y=x+900 -----> equation A

Cooper

y=6x+400 -----> equation B

solve the system of equations

equate both equations

x+900=6x+400

6x-x=900-400

5x=500

x=100 days

using a graphing tool

solve the system by graphing

Remember that the solution is the intersection point both graphs

so

see the attached figure

please wait a minute to draw the system

the solution is the point (100, 1,000)

that means

when x=100 days the amount is y=$1,000

Tyrone has $900 in his retirement account, and Cooper has $400 in his. Tyrone is adding-example-1
