First, write both equations in slope-intercept form:

y=mx+b

Where:

m= slope (rise /run)

b= y-intercept (where the line crosses the y axis)

y=-1/2x+4 (a)

5x-4y=12

-4y= -5x+12

y= (-5x+12) /-4

y= 5/4x-3 (b)

The system:

y=-1/2x+4 (a)

y= 5/4x-3 (b)

To graph the function, first, locate the y-intercept and then plot points with the slope.

For (a)

b= 4 (0,4)

m= -1/2 = for every 2 units to the right along the x axis, the line goes down 1 unit.

Same process for (b)

Solve the following system of equations graphically on the set of axes below.y=-1/2x-example-1
