The sample space while rolling a die is

since there are 6 possible outcomes, the probability of obtaining any side of the die is

P(\text{one side)=}(1)/(6)

Then, the probability to have a number less than 3 is

P(\text{side 1)+P(side 2)=}(1)/(6)+(1)/(6)

since

(1)/(6)+(1)/(6)=(2)/(6)=(1)/(3)

we have

P(\text{side 1)+P(side 2)=}(1)/(3)

that is, the probability to get a number less than 3 is 1/3, which is equal to 0.333.
