Given:

The taxi charges $3.50 for the first mile and then $2.75 for each mile.

The total charge is $ 18.63.

The equation is given as,

\begin{gathered} c=f+(r\cdot(m-1)) \\ c=\text{ total charge} \\ f=\text{ charge of first mile} \\ r=\text{ rate }for\text{ the rest of the miles} \\ m=\text{ number of miles} \\ m-1\text{ because first mile is not included} \end{gathered}

Put the values in the equation,

\begin{gathered} 18.63=3.50+(2.75(m-1)) \\ 18.63-3.50=2.75m-2.75 \\ 15.13+2.75=2.75m \\ m=(17.88)/(2.75) \\ m\approx6.5 \end{gathered}

Answer: Juan's taxi ride to the movie is approximately 6.5 miles.
