Problem

Roger ran 13.2 miles in 1.6 hours. Ana ran 10.85 miles in 1.4 hours. Who had the faster average speed? How much faster? Explain. ran faster by miles per hour. Roger ran with an average speed of miles per hour. Ana ran with an average speed of miles per hour. (Type whole numbers or decimals.) Enter your answer in each of the answer boxes.

Solution

For this case we can use the definition of velocity given by:

V= D/t

Where D represent the distance travelled and t the time. If we replace the values given for each person we have:

VRoger= 13.2mi/ 1.6 hr = 8.25 mi/hr

VAna= 10.85mi/1.4hr= 7.75 mi/hr

Then we can see that VRoger> Vana and we can calculate the difference as:

8.25 - 7.75= 0.5 mi/hr

The finlal answer then would be:

Roger ran faster by 0.5 miles per hour. Roger ran with an average speed of 8.25 miles per hour. Ana ran with an average speed of 7.75 miles per hour.
