Maria and Pedro must divide two pets - a cat and a dog - and a savings account. They decide to use the Adjusted Winner procedure, and each of them assigns a total of 100 points, to be split among the three items. Maria assigns 61 points to the dog, 7 points to the cat, and the rest of her points to the savings account. Pedro assigns 9 points to the dog, 71 points to the cat, and the rest of his points to the savings account. With those point assignments, Maria will get the dog, Pedro will take the cat, and they will split the savings. What percentage of the savings account will Maria get?

Final answer:

Maria will receive approximately 57.69% of the savings account after using the Adjusted Winner procedure to divide the dog, cat, and savings account with Pedro, following the transfer of 2 points from her initial share to Pedro's to equalize their total point values.

Step-by-step explanation:

Maria and Pedro are using the Adjusted Winner procedure to divide possessions, and they have to distribute a dog, a cat, and a savings account by assigning points. Maria assigns 61 points to the dog and 7 points to the cat, with the remainder (32 points) going to the savings account. Pedro, on the other hand, assigns 9 points to the dog and 71 points to the cat, with the remainder (20 points) also going to the savings account. To determine the percentage of the savings account Maria gets, we have to even out the total points given to each person because each started with 100 points.

Maria starts with the dog (61 points) and the savings account (32 points), totaling 93 points. Pedro starts with the cat (71 points) and the savings account (20 points), totaling 91 points. The difference between the two totals (93 - 91) is 2 points which need to be equalized from the savings account. Since Pedro needs 2 more points, we can transfer these points from Maria's share of the savings account to Pedro's.

Maria initially had 32 points in the savings account and we transferred 2 points out. So, Maria ends up with 30 points towards the savings account. As a percentage of the total savings points (52, since Maria had 32 and Pedro 20), Maria gets 30/52 which is approximately 57.69% of the savings account. Pedro gets the remaining 42.31%.
