The year the population of the country will reach 40 million, obtained using a linear model is in about the year 2018

What is a linear equation?; A linear equation is an equation that graph of the ordered pairs of inputs and outputs obtained from the equation form a straight line graph on the coordinate plane.

Whereby the population in 2013 is about 38.4 million and the suggested population growth rate is 0.35 million people per year. The year the population will reach 40 million if the population continues to grow at the rate of 0.35 million people per year can therefore be found using a linear equation of the form y = m·x + b

Where, y = The calculated population value

m = The slope, which is the average rate of population growth

b = The y-intercept, which is the population in 2013

x = The duration under study in years

When y = 40 million, we get;

40 = 0.35·x + 38.4

x = (40 - 38.4)/0.35

x ≈ 5 years

2013 + 5 years = 2018

Therefore, in 2018, the population will reach 40 million

The table of values for the population of the country between 2010 and 2015, presented are;

Year Population (Millions)

2010 36.5

2011 37.7

2012 38.2

2013 38.4

2014 38.9

2015 39.1

b. The average rate of population growth between 2013 and 2015 is 0.35 million people per year. If the population continues to grow at this rate, in which year will it reach 40 million?
