The calculated value of the ratio AB : BC : CD is 4 : 3 : 17

How to determine the ratio AB : BC : CD

From the question, we have the following parameters that can be used in our computation:

AB : BD = 1 : 5

AC : CD = 7 : 17

Express the ratios as fractions

So, we have

AB = 1/(5 + 1) = 1/6

AC = 7/(7 + 17) = 7/24

CD = 17/(7 + 17) = 17/24

The ratio BC is calculated using

BC = AC - AB

So, we have

BC = 7/24 - 1/6

Evaluate the difference

BC = 3/24

Simplify

BC = 1/8

Next, we have

AB : BC : CD = 1/6 : 1/8 : 17/24

Multiply through by 24

AB : BC : CD = 4 : 3 : 17

Hence, the ratio AB : BC : CD is 4 : 3 : 17

AB : BC : CD = 4 : 3 : 17

Points A, B, C, D lies in order on a straight line so draw:

  • Line:

A B C D

---------------------------------

AB : BD = 1 : 5 total = 1 + 5 = 6

AC : CD = 7 : 17 total = 7 + 17 = 24

To make the total equal, multiply first set by 4.

AB : BD = 4 : 20

AC : CD = 7 : 17

Now find missing BC = BD - CD = 20 - 17 = 3

So final: AB : BC : CD = 4 : 3 : 17
